Nestled on the rugged coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Cape Spear stands as a beacon at the easternmost point of North America. It’s a place where the forces of nature collide with centuries of history, creating a landscape that is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
The first thing that will strike you as you approach is the sheer grandeur of the landscape. Towering cliffs, sculpted by the relentless power of the North Atlantic, while waves crash on the rocky shoreline below. The air is filled with the tang of salt and cries of seagulls which create a sense of wildness and freedom that is palpable.
At the heart of Cape Spear stands its most iconic landmark: the historic lighthouse. Dating back to 1836, this study structure has weathered storms, witnessed shipwrecks, and guided countless sailors safely through the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic. Stepping inside, you get transported back in time, surrounded by the artifacts and stories of the brave souls who tended the light in years gone by.
The lighthouse is open to visitors from June to October, and there are often demonstrations about how life was way back when.
But Cape Spear is not just a place of history; it’s also a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are several rugged coastal trails that wind their way around the cape, and Cape Spear is one of many stops along the gorgeous East Coast Trail. During the summer whales feed and frolic, and seabirds soar overhead in search of their next meal.
Of course no trip to Cape Spear is complete without a visit to the rocky promontory that marks North America’s Most Easterly Point. Here, with the sun and wind on your face, you really get a profound sense of connection to something greater than yourself.
Whether you are passing through on the East Coast Trail, or are at the end of your day at Cape Spear, don’t miss a visit to the Cape Spear Café. Enjoy a luscious bowl of fish chowder, some expertly-made traditional NL fish cakes, or pre-order a picnic to take out to a picnic table or to enjoy on the barrens. Be careful not to get too close to the rocks though, as rogue waves have been known to catch some curious sight-seers unawares.
Some other delights at the cafe include local desserts, paninis, and salads. And be sure to ask about Donna’s to-DIE-for date squares to go with your coffee!
At only a 15 minute drive from downtown St. John’s, Cape Spear is a do-not-miss on anyone’s list. The Parks Canada staff is super friendly and you are sure to enjoy your visit. No matter the weather, Cape Spear is worth the trip off the beaten path, and is sure to delight!
